Pairs well with

Montgomery opens garnet-red plumes on dark stems, the deepest red in the astilbes and darker than most sources let on. Astilbe japonica 'Montgomery' grows 16 to 20 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8.

Bloom comes in early to midsummer and holds for several weeks. The dried plumes stand into winter if you leave them up.

The foliage emerges bronze-green and matures to deep green, finely cut and fern-like, forming a dense mound that stays presentable all season.

Astilbe needs consistent moisture and will brown at the leaf edges if it dries out, which is the single most common way people lose it. Part shade with morning sun and steady water is the combination it wants, and it takes wet ground better than most shade perennials. Deer leave it alone.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist to wet, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently throughout the growing season- astilbe declines quickly in dry soil. Never allow the soil to dry out completely. Fertilize in spring and after flowering with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Divide every 3–4 years in spring or fall when the center of the clump begins to die out. The deep red flower plumes are particularly vivid and rich in color among red astilbes. A superb choice for moist shade gardens and pond edges.
