Bixby is among the first azaleas to flower, covering itself in vibrant pink before most of the genus has broken bud. Rhododendron 'Bixby' grows 18 to 24 inches tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.
Early bloom means the display sometimes catches a late frost, so a sheltered position away from morning sun on frozen buds helps.
The habit is low and spreading, wider than tall, which suits a foundation bed or the front of a border. The small glossy leaves hold through winter.
Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.
