Pairs well with

Large ruffled pink flowers open later than most azaleas, extending the season by several weeks after the spring bloomers have finished. Rhododendron 'Gumpo Pink' grows 18 to 24 inches tall and 2 to 3 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 6 through Zone 8.

This is a Satsuki azalea, a group bred in Japan for late bloom and large flowers on small plants. The flowers are outsized relative to the shrub.

The habit is low and dense with small glossy evergreen leaves, holding through winter.

The compact size suits a container, a rock garden, or the front edge of a border. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) enriched with peat moss or compost. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep with shredded bark or pine needles.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently, especially during the first season and dry summer periods. Prune lightly immediately after flowering- Gumpo azaleas bloom later than most, and buds for the next season form shortly after bloom. Fertilize in spring with an acid-specific azalea fertilizer. Avoid alkaline soils and high-pH water. This is one of the last azaleas to bloom each season, providing color when most others have finished.
