Pairs well with

Tubular true red flowers open in early summer, later than nearly every other azalea, and the shape is built for hummingbirds. Rhododendron 'Red Demon' grows 42 to 54 inches tall and 36 to 48 inches wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 7.

The late bloom fills a gap after the spring azaleas finish, and hummingbirds and butterflies come to the flowers through it.

This is a deciduous azalea, so the leaves drop in fall. Zone 4 hardiness is unusual.

Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Alkaline ground turns the foliage yellow. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) with generous organic matter. Space 4–6 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the crown.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently, especially during the first season and dry periods. Deciduous azaleas are often more cold-hardy and adaptable than evergreen types. Prune lightly immediately after flowering to preserve next year's flower buds. Fertilize in spring with an acid azalea fertilizer. Monitor for lace bugs in summer. The vivid red flowers are exceptionally bold and produced in abundance in spring, often with a pleasant fragrance. Largely pest-free when sited correctly with acidic, well-drained soil.
