Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall near a water feature, pond edge, rain garden, or any consistently moist or wet area. Buttonbush is a native shrub that thrives in conditions that would kill most other plants. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball and water well. No soil amendment is necessary — it performs best in natural, unamended soil. Space plants 5–8 feet apart.

Care Tips

Prune in early spring to shape and remove any dead wood from winter. Buttonbush blooms on new wood, so spring pruning encourages strong new flowering stems. It is an outstanding plant for pollinators — the spherical white flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Birds feed on the seeds in fall and winter. Very low maintenance once established in an appropriate moist site.
