Plant in spring or fall in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Avoid rich, moist soils which cause weak, floppy growth.

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant. Cut the entire plant back hard- to within a few inches of the ground- in early spring before new growth emerges. This is essential for good bloom, as Dark Knight flowers on new wood produced each season. Feed lightly in early spring after cutting back. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. The fragrant, deep blue-violet flowers are outstanding for butterflies and bees.
