Pairs well with

Clusters of true red flowers on a shrubby plant that needs no pruning at all. Rosa 'BAIlim', sold as Easy Elegance® Chi™, grows 3 to 4 feet tall and wide in full sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 7.

True red is scarce among shrub roses, where most lean toward pink or orange as the flowers age.

Most of the Easy Elegance roses come from the renowned breeder Ping Lim, aimed at putting hybrid tea flower quality on a plant that survives a northern winter without a spray program. They grow on their own roots rather than grafted, so a plant killed back in a hard winter comes back as itself. Pruning is a cutback in early spring and nothing more.

Disease resistance is high and the plant asks for essentially nothing, which is where the name comes from.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 24 inches apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Dig a wide planting hole, incorporate compost into the backfill, and water deeply. Mulch 2–3 inches around the base and choose a site with good air circulation. Chi is a compact, well-behaved rose that fits nicely into mixed borders and smaller garden spaces.

Care Tips

Prune in early spring, removing dead wood and cutting healthy canes back by about one-third. Deadhead spent blooms consistently to encourage repeat flowering throughout the season. Fertilize regularly from spring through late summer with a rose fertilizer. Chi has good disease resistance, making it a manageable choice for home gardeners. Water consistently at the base of the plant rather than overhead.
