Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 18–24 inches apart. Little bluestem is a native prairie grass that thrives in poor to average, well-drained soils — avoid planting in rich, amended beds, which causes floppy, weak growth. No soil amendment is needed. Water regularly through the first season to establish the root system, then reduce significantly as the grass becomes very drought tolerant.

Care Tips

Cut plants back hard to 4–6 inches above the ground in late winter or very early spring, before new growth begins. This is the most critical maintenance step. Cinnamon Sticks earns its name from the warm cinnamon and rust tones the foliage takes on in fall and winter — the plant is arguably most beautiful in the colder months. No fertilizing is needed. A four-season native grass with outstanding ornamental value.
