Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall near a sturdy trellis, fence, or other support. Dig a wide, generous planting hole, incorporate compost, and set the crown 2–3 inches below soil level to protect against clematis wilt. Water thoroughly and mulch well to keep roots cool. Train stems to the support as they grow.

Care Tips

The President is a Group 2 clematis — in early spring, prune lightly to remove dead wood and cut remaining stems back to a strong pair of buds. Heavy pruning removes the first bloom on old wood. Fertilize in spring. Water consistently. The large, rich purple-violet flowers with pointed petals are a classic clematis look. Grows vigorously and produces an excellent early summer display followed by a good repeat bloom later in the season.
