Pairs well with

Silver-blue foliage sets off the bright yellow flowers on this one, a color combination the green-leaved forms do not offer. Hypericum kalmianum 'PIIHYP I', sold as Cobalt-n-Gold, grows 2 to 3 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 7.

Bloom runs from midsummer into fall, with yellow star-shaped flowers carrying a prominent boss of stamens.

The habit spreads wider than tall, which makes it useful as a low mass planting or a bank cover rather than a single specimen.

Bees work the flowers through the bloom. Kalm's St. John's wort wants full sun and well-drained soil, handles drought and poor ground once established, and dislikes wet feet. Deer leave it alone.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 2–3 feet apart. St. John's Wort adapts to a wide range of soil conditions and tolerates poor, dry soils once established. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball, backfill with existing soil, and water well. A light mulch helps retain moisture during the establishment period.

Care Tips

Cut plants back by about one-third in early spring to encourage fresh, vigorous growth and the best flowering display. Once established, this shrub is quite drought tolerant and requires little supplemental watering. No heavy fertilizing is needed. Remove any dead or damaged stems as needed throughout the season.
