Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 10–15 feet apart, or 4–6 feet if using as a shrub border. Water thoroughly after planting. Avoid rich, wet soils- lean conditions produce the best foliage color.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant. For the most intense foliage color, cut the plant back hard- to within 12–18 inches of the ground- in early spring each year. This sacrifices the smoky flower plumes but produces dramatically larger, more richly colored leaves on vigorous new growth. If you prefer the smoky effect, prune more lightly, removing only the oldest stems. Largely pest-free.
