Pairs well with

Buds start red, open to pink, and fade to white, so the plant carries three colors at once through the bloom. This Proven Winners® selection, Rhododendron 'NCRX1', sold as Dandy Man Color Wheel®, grows 4 to 8 feet tall and wide in part sun to part shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 9.

The color shift plays out over several weeks as newer flowers open behind the fading ones.

The large-leaf rhododendrons hold their foliage year-round rather than thinning like the small-leaved types. Below about 25 degrees the leaves droop and curl up, curling tighter the colder it gets, and they open again within hours once temperatures rise. It looks alarming the first winter and it is entirely normal, a water-conserving response rather than a sign of trouble.

It resists root rot and leaf spot, and the size range is wide enough that placement matters: given room it reaches eight feet. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in acidic, moist, well-drained soil with protection from hot afternoon sun. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost if needed. Set the root ball at or just above grade to prevent crown rot. Mulch 3–4 inches deep to keep roots cool and moist. Water thoroughly at planting.

Care Tips

One of this rhododendron's most charming features is that its blooms change color as they age, creating a multi-toned display. Snap off spent flower clusters after bloom to improve the following year's show. Apply an acid fertilizer once in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the growing season.
