Eye-Catcher Tanager opens bright orange-red, a warm color that sits between the oranges and the true reds. Echinacea Eye-Catcher 'Tanager' grows 22 to 24 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide in full sun to part sun, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 8.
Bloom starts in early summer and continues into fall on well-branched stems, and the flowers carry a light fragrance, which is uncommon in a coneflower.
The habit is upright and a little taller than wide, which places it in the front or middle of a border.
Leave the last seedheads standing at the end of the season for goldfinches. Coneflowers take drought, heat, humidity, and poor soil once established, and they want well-drained ground. Winter wet is the usual cause of failure, so avoid low spots that stay saturated. Deer generally leave them alone.
