Sandy Claws Barrenwort

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained to dry soil in partial to full shade, spacing 12–18 inches apart. Sandy Claws barrenwort produces attractive, spurred spring flowers and forms a dense, weed-suppressing groundcover over time. Incorporate compost into the planting area and water well. Mulch to retain moisture through the first season. It tolerates dry shade exceptionally well once established.

Cut back old foliage in late winter before new growth begins to showcase the spring flowers. Once established, barrenwort requires very little water or attention. It spreads gradually by rhizomes to form a dense carpet. No fertilizing is needed in average soils. One of the best groundcover solutions for dry, shaded spots under established trees where few other plants will thrive.
