Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil, spacing 5–6 feet apart. This oakleaf hydrangea's globe-shaped flower heads are an eye-catching variation on the classic cone-shaped form. Dig a generous planting hole, amend with compost, and water deeply. Mulch 3 inches deep to retain moisture. Avoid hot, dry, or fully exposed sites.

Care Tips

Prune lightly right after bloom in late summer if any shaping is needed — oakleaf hydrangea blooms on old wood, so pruning in fall or spring removes next year's flower buds. The white ball-shaped blooms age to beautiful parchment and pink tones and persist attractively through fall. Exfoliating cinnamon-colored bark provides dramatic winter interest. Fertilize in spring with a balanced fertilizer. Water during dry spells.
