Pairs well with

Unlike most shrubs, this native blooms in late autumn, featuring spidery yellow flowers with a sweet scent. The golden-yellow fall foliage adds brightness to the landscape just as other plants go dormant.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space 10–15 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it tolerates moderate drought and a wide range of soil conditions including clay. Little pruning is needed- remove dead or crossing branches in early spring. Fertilize lightly in spring. The spidery yellow flowers appear on bare stems in late fall or winter, providing extraordinary interest when almost nothing else is in bloom. Excellent yellow and orange fall foliage color. Largely pest- and disease-free. A superb native large shrub or small tree for four-season interest.
