Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil in partial shade, spacing 12–18 inches apart. Blackout is a coral bells variety with near-black foliage — among the deepest and most intensely dark-colored of all coral bells available. The dramatic foliage provides a striking contrast with lighter-colored companion plants. Incorporate compost into the planting area and water well. Mulch to retain moisture.

Care Tips

Remove tattered or old foliage in early spring before new growth emerges. Divide clumps every three to four years in spring, replanting at the correct depth. Fertilize lightly in spring. The near-black foliage creates a dramatic contrast alongside chartreuse, silver, or brightly colored companions. The airy flower spikes attract hummingbirds in summer. One of the darkest-leaved coral bells available — a bold choice for shade garden design.
