Incrediball is the smooth hydrangea bred for stronger stems. It carries the same enormous white flower heads that made Annabelle a classic, up to a foot across, on wood thick enough to hold them upright through a rainstorm. Hydrangea arborescens 'Abetwo' grows 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8, best in part shade with morning sun, and reaches full size by about the third season.
Bloom starts in early summer and holds for weeks, opening pale green, turning pure white, then aging back to green as the season goes on. The dried heads stand through winter and are worth leaving up for the structure.
Because it is a smooth hydrangea, it flowers on new wood. That is the practical difference from the bigleaf types: the flower buds are not sitting on last year's stems waiting for a cold snap or a late frost to kill them, which is why this one blooms reliably in Zone 3 where the mopheads will not. Soil pH does not change the color. White stays white.
It wants consistent moisture and tolerates ground that stays wet, so a low spot with imperfect drainage suits it. In hot climates with full afternoon sun the leaves wilt and the flower heads brown at the edges, so give it shade from midday on.
