Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, deep, fertile soil. Space 40–60 feet apart- this is a large, long-lived native tree. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch well away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it is quite drought tolerant. Little pruning is needed- remove dead or crossing branches in late fall. Be aware that black walnut produces juglone, a chemical toxic to many plants- avoid planting sensitive species such as tomatoes, apples, and many ornamentals within the root zone. The edible nuts are highly nutritious and wildlife value is exceptional. Largely pest-free, though walnut caterpillars can defoliate in summer without lasting harm.
