Nipmuck sets loads of buds that color deep red in late May and open to flowers so pale they are nearly white, with a pink petal back that keeps the two-tone effect going after the buds are gone. This selection of the native Kalmia latifolia grows 4 to 5 feet tall and wide in part shade to full shade, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8.
The form is dense and rounded without pruning, and it sets bud reliably year after year.
The foliage is deep, dark, and shiny, holding through winter and carrying a shade bed in the months when the deciduous shrubs are bare.
Nipmuck thrives in partial to full shade and makes a good border planting. It wants acidic, moist, well-drained soil and struggles in heavy clay or alkaline ground. Mulch the shallow roots. Deer leave it alone.
