Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 12–18 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Good drainage is essential- gayfeather will rot in wet, poorly drained soil.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant. The vivid purple flower spikes open from the top of the spike downward, which is the reverse of most spike-flowering plants. Deadhead after flowering to keep the planting tidy. Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. No fertilization needed in lean soil. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. Excellent for butterflies and as a cut flower.
