Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space 10–20 feet apart depending on use. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it tolerates wet conditions and moderate drought better than most magnolias. Little pruning is needed- remove dead or crossing branches in late spring after flowering. Fertilize lightly in spring with an acid fertilizer. The creamy-white, lemon-scented flowers appear over a very long season from late spring into summer. Sweetbay magnolia is semi-evergreen in milder climates. An outstanding, fragrant native tree for moist sites.
