Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained to dry, acidic soil. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Excellent drainage is essential- bearberry will not tolerate wet or poorly drained soil.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is highly drought tolerant and extremely adaptable to lean, sandy, rocky, and coastal soils. No fertilization needed. Bearberry spreads by rooting stems to form a dense, weed-suppressing groundcover. Trim lightly after flowering if needed. The small, white to pale pink flowers in spring are followed by vivid red berries attractive to birds. The glossy, evergreen foliage turns attractive bronze-red in winter. Massachusetts is a particularly low, ground-hugging selection.
