Pairs well with

Glossy, deep burgundy new growth emerges in spring and matures to olive green, then colors up red again in fall. Rounded clusters of soft pink flowers flecked with wine-purple open in late spring — weeks ahead of other bee balms — and keep coming through summer. A compact, clumping native selection with excellent powdery mildew resistance.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to part sun. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting, then let the soil dry between waterings — this one prefers it on the dry side and dislikes soggy ground. Mulch lightly, keeping mulch off the crown.

Care Tips

Water regularly during the first season to establish, then only during extended dry spells — established plants are notably drought tolerant. Deadhead spent flowers to extend the bloom window into late summer. Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring. Clumps stay tidy and spread far less aggressively than other bee balms, so frequent division is not required- divide every 3–4 years in spring if the center thins. Powdery mildew resistance is excellent for the genus. Foliage emerges glossy red-purple, matures olive green, and reddens again in fall for three seasons of interest.
