Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Highly adaptable to clay and poor soils.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Cut back to 4–6 inches in late winter or early spring- do not cut back in fall. Divide every 4–5 years in spring. No fertilization needed. Largely pest-free. Northwind is one of the most upright and sturdy switchgrass selections available- it holds its vertical form magnificently without flopping, even in exposed and windy sites. The blue-green foliage turns golden in fall. An outstanding, architecturally bold ornamental grass with exceptional garden presence.
