Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in average, well-drained to moist soil, spacing 24–30 inches apart. Shenandoah is one of the most widely grown and admired switch grass varieties, featuring outstanding red fall color that develops early in the season — one of the most vibrant fall color displays of any ornamental grass. It adapts to a wide range of soils including moist and clay conditions.

Care Tips

Cut plants back to 4–6 inches in late winter before new growth begins. The red fall color is the defining feature — combined with the attractive upright habit and airy seed heads, Shenandoah provides outstanding multi-season interest. No fertilizing is needed in average soils. One of the most ornamental native grasses available, excelling in both naturalistic plantings and mixed borders. Very cold hardy and adaptable.
