Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, well-drained soil. Space 2–3 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Switchgrass is a native prairie grass that adapts to a wide range of soils including clay.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season; once established it is highly drought tolerant. Cut back to 4–6 inches in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Do not cut back in fall- the seed heads and fall color provide outstanding winter structure and wildlife habitat. Divide every 4–5 years in spring. No fertilization needed. Largely pest-free. The dark, steel-blue foliage and bold, upright habit make Thundercloud one of the most dramatic switchgrass selections available.
