Planting Tips

Plant in well-drained, fertile soil amended with compost. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Plan companions nearby to fill the gap when poppies go dormant in summer.

Care Tips

Water regularly during spring growth and bloom. After flowering, allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally- do not remove it prematurely. The plant rests through summer dormancy and re-emerges with fresh foliage in fall. Divide clumps every 3–4 years in late summer during dormancy. Largely pest-free. The large, vivid scarlet-orange flowers with black centers are one of the most dramatic sights in the late spring garden.
