Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in acidic, moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. Katsura is a distinctive andromeda variety with attractive, newly emerging foliage in warm, copper-red tones that contrast beautifully with the white flower clusters in early spring. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost if needed. Set root ball at or just above grade, mulch 3–4 inches deep, and water well.

Care Tips

Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing dead wood in early spring after flowering. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually. The colorful new growth and pendant white flower clusters together create an extraordinary spring display. All parts are toxic if ingested. Katsura is one of the most ornamental andromeda varieties for multi-season interest in properly sited, acidic garden conditions.
