Pairs well with

Eastern white pine carries soft flexible blue-green needles in bundles of five, which gives the whole tree a feathery look nothing else in the genus matches. Pinus strobus reaches 50 to 80 feet tall and 20 to 40 feet wide in full sun, hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8, and it grows fast.

This was the tree that built colonial New England, tall and straight enough that the British Crown marked the best specimens for Royal Navy masts.

It is a larval host for eastern pine elfin butterflies, and the seeds feed crossbills, chickadees, and red squirrels. The dense evergreen canopy provides winter cover for birds.

Give it room. This is a forest tree that outgrows most suburban lots, and it wants acidic, well-drained soil and full sun. It does not tolerate road salt, air pollution, or compacted soil well, so keep it away from driveways and streets that get winter treatment. Deer will browse young trees.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Space 20–40 feet apart depending on use. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 3–4 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Care Tips

Water deeply and regularly the first 2–3 seasons. Once established it is moderately drought tolerant. Little pruning is needed for a natural form. To control size or encourage density, pinch or cut back half of each new candle of growth in spring before needles fully expand. Avoid shearing. Fertilize lightly in spring. Eastern white pine is fast-growing and one of the most majestic native conifers in North America- give it ample room to reach its full, graceful potential.
