Hoopla Rhododendron

Spotswood Greenery

Vibrant pink flowers with a distinct yellow blotch create a bicolor effect in late spring. Rhododendron 'Hoopla' grows 5 to 6 feet tall and wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 4 through Zone 9.

Zone 4 through Zone 9 is a wider range than most rhododendrons carry, taking both hard winters and hot summers.

The large-leaf rhododendrons hold their foliage year-round rather than thinning like the small-leaved types. Below about 25 degrees the leaves droop and curl up, curling tighter the colder it gets, and they open again within hours once temperatures rise. It looks alarming the first winter and it is entirely normal, a water-conserving response rather than a sign of trouble.

The foliage is glossy and dark. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.

Recently, I received a #3 pot Wollerton Old Hall Rose, a #3 Alnwick Rose, and a #2 pot Sweet Mademoiselle rose from Spotswood Greenery. I could not be more pleased and grateful. Bought a David Austin rose; it arrived quickly however it had some damage upon arrival. Ended up pruning and defoliating a good bit to get rid of the broken cane and pest damage, but I expect it to be a beautiful bush down the road.

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) generously amended with peat moss or compost. Dig a wide, shallow hole. Space 5–6 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the crown.

Care Tips

Plant in part shade, ideally with morning sun and afternoon shade. Small-leaved types handle more sun.
Acidic soil is a must, ideally pH 4.5 to 6.0. Test before planting. In neutral or alkaline soil the leaves yellow between the veins and the plant slowly declines.
Plant in well-drained soil rich in organic matter, such as composted pine bark or leaf mold. Heavy, wet soil is the main cause of loss.
Set the top of the root ball slightly above the surrounding soil, never deeper.
Water deeply through the first two summers and in dry spells after that. The roots are shallow and dry out quickly. Water well in fall before the ground freezes.
Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep with pine bark or shredded leaves, keeping it back from the stems. Do not dig around the roots.
Feed lightly in spring with a fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Do not feed after midsummer.
Snap off spent flower clusters after bloom, taking care not to break the new buds just below them.
Prune right after flowering. Next year's flower buds form in summer, so later pruning removes them.
Leaves roll and droop in hard cold; this is normal. Winter wind and sun can scorch the leaves, so a sheltered spot helps.
Deer browse rhododendrons, especially in winter; protect plants where deer are a problem.
