Polar Night Rhododendron

Plant in spring in acidic, moist, well-drained soil with afternoon shade protection. Polar Night produces very dark, deep purple-black flower buds that open to deep purple flowers — among the darkest and most dramatic in the rhododendron palette. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost if needed. Set root ball at or just above grade and mulch deeply.

Remove spent flower clusters after bloom. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually. Polar Night provides a uniquely dark and dramatic spring flower display that is unlike most other rhododendrons. The dark buds are ornamental even before the flowers open.
