Pairs well with

Golden-yellow flowers spotted with red open in spring on a low dense shrub, and yellow is scarce among the compact rhododendrons. Rhododendron yakushimanum Miyama™ 'Gold Prinz' grows 2 to 3 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide in part shade, hardy from Zone 6 through Zone 9.

The red spotting sits in the throat of each flower, giving the cluster more depth than a plain yellow would.

The yakushimanum hybrids come from a species native to a single Japanese island, and they inherit its best traits: dense compact habit, thick leaves with a felted tan coating underneath, and heavy bud set on young plants. They hold their foliage better through winter than most large-leaf rhododendrons, though the leaves still roll in hard cold, which reverses as soon as it warms.

The foliage is dark green and unusually dense, and the habit stays low and spreading. Acidic soil is necessary, roughly pH 4.5 to 6.0, with good drainage and steady moisture. Mulch the shallow roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring in acidic, moist, well-drained soil with afternoon shade protection. Gold Prinz is a compact rhododendron with golden-yellow flowers — a sought-after color in cold-hardy rhododendrons. Amend soil with peat or acidic compost. Set root ball at or just above grade, mulch 3–4 inches deep, and water well. Choose a sheltered site away from harsh winds.

Care Tips

Remove spent flower clusters after bloom. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually. The golden-yellow flower color is unusual and attractive in the rhododendron palette. Gold Prinz performs best in cooler climates and provides reliable spring color in properly sited, acidic garden conditions. A distinctive and rewarding rhododendron for yellow flower color in the spring garden.
