Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in well-drained to dry, average to poor soil, spacing 8–12 feet apart. Smooth sumac is a native shrub or small tree that thrives in lean, dry conditions including rocky slopes and disturbed areas. It spreads by root suckers to form colonies and is excellent for naturalized areas and erosion control. No soil preparation is needed. Very drought tolerant once established.

Care Tips

Smooth sumac spreads aggressively by underground runners — a significant asset for slope stabilization but requires management near manicured areas. Remove suckers to control spread. The brilliant scarlet fall foliage and persistent red seed clusters are among the most vivid of any native plant. Very drought tolerant and cold hardy. No regular fertilizing needed. An outstanding native plant for wildlife value and exceptional fall color.
