Pairs well with

Ball Gown is the rose for a narrow bed or a cutting garden where floor space is short. This Romantica shrub rose, Rosa 'Meipapey', grows 5 to 6 feet tall but only 2 to 3 feet wide, upright and columnar rather than mounding, which lets it fit between a walk and a wall where a standard shrub rose would crowd. Full sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 11, and it reaches full size in two or three seasons.

The flowers are the Romantica type: large, very full, packed with petals in a deep pink that holds its color instead of fading pale in summer heat. The form is old-fashioned, quartered and cupped, carried on long straight stems that cut well and hold in a vase. Classic rose fragrance, and it reblooms through the season rather than flushing once.

Disease resistance is good, which is the practical advantage of the modern Romantica breeding over the antique roses whose flowers it imitates. It holds foliage through a humid summer without an intensive spray program.

The upright habit can leave the base bare, so it pairs well with something low planted in front. Space 3 to 4 feet apart. Shipped on its own roots.

Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in well-drained, fertile soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch away from the canes.

Care Tips

Water deeply and consistently throughout the season. Deadhead spent blooms for continuous flowering. Prune in early spring to remove dead or weak canes. Fertilize with a rose fertilizer in spring and midsummer. Good disease resistance. Monitor for black spot and aphids. Romantica Ballgown produces lavishly full, old-fashioned style flowers with ruffled, ball-gown layers of petals in sumptuous, romantic tones- the perfect name for the extravagant, swirling floral display. A vigorous, floriferous, fragrant rose.
