Red Eden is the climbing rose for an old-fashioned flower without the old-fashioned disease problems. Rosa 'Eden Climber' Red reaches 10 to 12 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide in full sun, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 9, and takes two or three seasons to build the cane structure that carries a full display.
The flowers are large, deeply cupped, and packed with petals in a dark velvet red, opening slowly and holding their shape for days. The fragrance is true damask, strong enough to scent the whole area around an arbor. It repeats through the season rather than giving one flush, heaviest in early summer.
Disease resistance is the reason to choose it over an heirloom climber with a similar flower. It holds clean foliage through humid summers with no spray program, which the antique red climbers cannot manage.
Give it a substantial support. A climber this size gets heavy and wants an arbor, a pergola, or a well-anchored trellis rather than a light fan. Train the main canes as close to horizontal as the structure allows, since that is what pushes flowering laterals along the full length instead of only at the top. Space 6 to 8 feet apart.
