New Dawn is the climbing rose that succeeds where others sulk. It tolerates part shade, poor soil, and general neglect better than any other classic climber, which is why it has stayed in commerce since 1930 and why it is the one to try on a north or east-facing wall. Rosa 'New Dawn' reaches 8 to 12 feet tall and 3 to 6 feet wide, hardy from Zone 5 through Zone 8, and covers a structure within a few seasons.
The flowers are soft blush pink, double and loosely formed, fading toward white as they age, so an established plant carries both tones at once. The fragrance is sweet and faintly fruity. It repeats reliably from early summer into fall rather than giving a single flush.
Disease resistance is excellent for a rose of its age, and it holds foliage through humid summers without spraying.
Plan for the vigor. This is not a rose for a small trellis beside a door. Give it an arbor, a pergola, a substantial fence, or a wall strung with real wire, and space plants 6 to 8 feet apart. Train the long canes horizontally to bring flowers along the whole length rather than just the tips. The prickles are large and hooked, so site it where you will not be reaching past it often.
