Jewel Black Raspberry

Plant in spring in fertile, well-drained soil, spacing 3–4 feet apart. Jewel is the most productive and widely grown black raspberry variety, bearing large, sweet, intensely flavored black berries in early summer. Prepare the planting bed with generous amounts of compost. Black raspberries prefer slightly drier conditions than red raspberries — excellent drainage is important. Mulch well.

Tip-prune new canes in summer when they reach 24–30 inches to encourage branching and more fruit the following year. After harvest, remove all canes that fruited to the ground. Fertilize in spring. Water consistently during fruit development. Black raspberries have a deeper, more complex flavor than red types — outstanding for fresh eating, jam, and baking. Give plants room to develop their naturally arching canes.
