Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, moist to dry, well-drained soil. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant and adaptable to a range of soil conditions including dry shade. Remove the oldest, most exhausted canes at the base each spring to encourage vigorous new growth. This native shrub spreads by suckering- remove suckers to control spread, or allow them to naturalize. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. The large, rose-pink flowers in summer are showy, followed by dry red berries that attract birds. Valuable for native plantings.
