Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average, well-drained soil. Space 18–24 inches apart. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch lightly around the base. Highly adaptable to clay, sandy, and poor soils.

Care Tips

Water regularly the first season; once established it is one of the most drought-tolerant native perennials available. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous bloom from midsummer through fall, or leave seed heads for birds. Cut back to the ground in late fall or early spring. Divide every 3–4 years in spring. Virtually pest- and disease-free. The classic golden-yellow flowers with dark brown centers are an iconic late summer wildflower, excellent for pollinators, cutting, and naturalistic plantings.
