Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to moist, well-drained soil. Space 3–4 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. This vigorous native perennial tolerates clay and a wide range of soil conditions.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant. The plant spreads by rhizomes to form large colonies over time- divide every 2–3 years in spring to control spread and maintain vigor. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring, or leave seed heads through winter for birds. Watch for aster yellows- distorted growth indicates infection; remove and discard affected plants. The vivid golden-yellow flowers with a green center cone in late summer are outstanding for pollinators and cutting. Largely otherwise pest-free.
