Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in average to lean, moist to dry, well-drained soil. Space 3-4 feet apart. This vigorous native perennial tolerates clay, poor soils, and partial shade.

Care Tips

Water regularly after planting; once established it is quite drought tolerant. The plant spreads by rhizomes to form a large colony over time- divide and thin every 2–3 years in spring to control spread and maintain vigor. Cut to the ground in late fall or early spring. Fertilize lightly in spring if desired. Watch for aster yellows- distorted growth is a sign of infection; remove and discard affected plants. Largely otherwise pest-free. The bright yellow flowers on tall stems in late summer are excellent for pollinators and cutting.
