Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained to wet soil. Highly adaptable to clay, poor, and wet soils. Space 6–8 feet apart. Water thoroughly after planting. Plant two or more elderberry varieties nearby for cross-pollination and best fruit production.

Care Tips

Water consistently after planting; once established it is quite adaptable and tolerates wet conditions very well. Prune out one-third of the oldest canes at the base in late winter each year to encourage vigorous new fruiting growth and maintain a tidy, manageable size. Fertilize lightly in spring. The large, flat clusters of white flowers in early summer are highly attractive to pollinators, and the dark purple-black berries in late summer are excellent for birds, wildlife, and making elderberry juice and preserves.
