Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall, spacing 5–6 feet apart. This dogwood adapts well to a wide range of soils, including moist conditions. Dig the planting hole to the depth of the root ball and water thoroughly. Mulch around the base to retain moisture. It is a tough, cold-hardy shrub that establishes easily without much fuss.

Care Tips

The colorful stems are this dogwood's star feature, providing vivid winter interest. To keep stem color at its brightest, cut all stems back hard to about 6 inches from the ground every two to three years in early spring. Young stems produce the most vibrant color, so this renewal pruning is key. Water during dry spells and apply a light balanced fertilizer in spring.
