Male Skimmia

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained, acidic soil in partial to full shade, spacing 3–4 feet apart. Male skimmia is a companion plant to female skimmia, required for cross-pollination to produce berries on female plants. It produces very fragrant, large white flower clusters in spring that are ornamental in their own right. Plant one male for every two to three female plants. Incorporate compost and water well.

Minimal pruning is needed. Feed with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Replenish mulch annually. Male skimmia's primary role is as a pollinator, but it is also ornamental — the large, fragrant flower clusters are showy and the foliage is attractive. All parts are toxic if ingested. A key companion plant for producing the ornamental winter berries on female skimmias. Plant both together for maximum effect.
