Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring once soil has warmed, spacing 18–24 inches apart in average garden soil. This Black Eyed Susan is adaptable and easy to establish — water regularly for the first few weeks, then reduce as the plant settles in. A light layer of mulch helps retain moisture and keep weeds down. It tolerates heat and brief dry spells well.

Care Tips

Deadhead regularly throughout summer to keep blooms coming strong. In autumn, you can leave seed heads standing for birds or cut back to the ground. Divide clumps every three years in spring if they become crowded. No heavy fertilizing is needed — too much nitrogen produces leafy plants with fewer flowers.
