Giant Meadow-rue

Plant in spring or fall in moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade, spacing 24–30 inches apart. Giant meadow-rue is a dramatic native perennial that can reach 6 feet or more in height, producing airy, lavender-pink flowers on tall, glaucous-blue stems in midsummer. Incorporate compost into the planting area. Water well and mulch generously to retain moisture.

Keep soil consistently moist — meadow-rue will not perform well in drought. Stake tall plants in exposed or windy locations to prevent flopping. Divide every three to four years in spring to maintain vigor. Fertilize lightly in spring. No heavy fertilizing is needed. The tall, airy flower display and glaucous blue foliage are extraordinarily elegant in the shade garden. An excellent back-of-border plant for moist, shaded settings.
