Planting and Care Guide

Planting Tips

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil, spacing 3–4 feet apart. Whipcord is a unique, slow-growing western red cedar with extraordinary, whip-like, drooping foliage that creates a very unusual, cascading texture unlike any standard conifer. The distinctive habit makes it an excellent conversation piece and specimen plant. Dig the planting hole to the same depth as the root ball and water well.

Care Tips

Minimal pruning is needed — the unique whip-cord drooping form is the primary ornamental feature and should be allowed to develop naturally. Remove any dead branches in early spring. Keep soil consistently moist. Apply a light balanced fertilizer in spring. Whipcord grows slowly but becomes increasingly distinctive and beautiful over the years. An excellent, unusual specimen conifer for gardeners who appreciate plants with truly distinctive form and texture.
