Water regularly after planting; once established this native shrub is adaptable to dry shade- one of its key strengths. Little pruning is needed; remove any dead or crossing branches in early spring. Fertilize lightly in spring if desired. The maple-like foliage turns vivid pink to red-purple in fall. The small blue-black berries are attractive to birds. Largely pest-free and deer resistant. An excellent, underused native shrub for shaded and woodland settings.
