Wells Special Hinoki Cypress

Plant in spring or fall in moist, well-drained soil with some protection from drying winds. This slow-growing Hinoki cypress develops a distinctive layered, fan-like branching pattern that gives it a sculptural, architectural quality in the garden. Dig the planting hole to the same depth as the root ball, water thoroughly, and mulch 2–3 inches deep. Keep consistently watered through the first growing season.

Minimal pruning is required — the natural layered form is the primary ornamental feature and should not be sheared into a formal shape. Remove any dead branches in early spring if needed. Keep soil consistently moist. Apply a light balanced fertilizer in spring. This is a long-lived, slow-growing specimen that improves with age.
